Mattins is an Anglican morning prayer service which draws from the monastic offices Matins, Lauds and Prime. Historically, Mattins was the main Sunday morning service on most Sundays in all Anglican parishes, with Holy Communion being celebrated after Mattins or Evensong, typically on the first Sunday of the month. Since the mid-twentieth century when Holy Communion became the principal Sunday service in many American Anglican parishes, Mattins has taken a backseat and is now sung much less frequently.

At Saint Stephen’s Church, Choral Mattins remains one of the jewels of the Anglican tradition and is sung by the Choir of Men & Boys on most Sundays, except for the first Sunday of the month (on which the Choir sings Evensong), Whitsunday, and Easter Day. The service begins at 11.00 am and ordinarily lasts about 60 minutes.
